Knee Injuries: MCL Grade II


MCL Tear Grade II Tear:


Incomplete tear of the MCL; some minor disruption of ligament fibers

  • Pain and swelling usually present
  • May complain of sensation of knee “buckling” or “giving out” when attempting to pivot or make a cutting movement during activity
  • Rest. Abstain from sports until symptoms subside.
  • Ice. Apply ice packs over a thin cloth for 20 minutes, 2-3 times a day
  • Compression. Applying an ace wrap may decrease swelling and help to control pain.
  • Elevate. Elevate the affected extremity above the level of your heart with a pillow.
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications such as Advil or Aleve may be helpful in minimizing swelling and controlling pain Incorporate a strengthening program as part of your work-out that focuses on regaining quad strength.
  • Incorporate a stretching program as part of your work-out
  • Gradual return to activity. In general, will be able to return to sports in 2-4 weeks. Bracing may be prescribed to protect the ligament while healing and upon return to sports
