Orthopedic Surgical Institute
St. Elizabeth Community Hospital is proud to offer a leading edge joint replacement program with the help of Dr. Thomas Coon and the OSI team. Dr. Coon has pioneered the art and science of minimally invasive joint replacement procedures using state of the art methods and technology. Dr. Coon began his experience with MIS Uni-compartmental Knee Arthroplasty (partial knee replacement) in 2000, developing and patenting instrumentation which allows bone cuts to be made from the side reducing the amount of exposure required for major knee surgery. Dr Coon has expanded this work with the development of the MIS Quad-Sparing Total Knee ArthroplastyTM. Working with an international team of orthopaedic experts, he continues to refine the principles of small incision knee surgery and is dedicated to teaching this breakthrough technology to the surgeons of tomorrow.
The MIS procedure is a treatment option for patients who truly suffer from Osteoarthritis of the knee or hip. Using the newly developed highly specialized instruments our surgeons are able to perform this minimally invasive procedure through 4 inch incisions as opposed to the 8 to 12 inch incision required for the traditional knee replacement surgery. Only the diseased portion of the knee is removed and a prothesis is implanted leaving the healthy portion of the knee untouched.
